Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy is a gentle, non invasive massage that helps realign abdominal organs, after physical and emotional traumas such as hard falls, abdominal surgery, difficult labor and delivery, the impact of certain sports and more.

It has been known  to help with pain reduction and improvement of symptoms related to post surgical adhesions, some painful digestive issues, painful menstrual cycles, fertility, cysts, fibroids, irregular cycles, menopausal symptoms and some types of back pain.

What to expect during a session:

  • Comprehensive review of your personal health history and current health care needs.
  • Abdominal massage focused on aligning reproductive and abdominal organs
  • Evaluation and application of structural alignment of spine with attention to the sacrum, lumbar, and thoracic spine.
  • Instruction in Self Care massage techniques to enhance your professional treatment session

Starting around age 21, I began having painful period cramping lasting about one day. By the end of my twenties it had increased to two days. By the end of my thirties it was up to three days and PMS which had been non-existent in my adolescence was now extreme. Having been a massage therapist since 1997 and committed to health and healing, I was perplexed and disheartened at my deteriorating situation.

In the Summer of 2007, I read an article in a massage and bodywork magazine about the benefits of Maya abdominal massage for women’s health. I felt compelled to attend a class to see if the techniques would help my cycles. I found Dr. Rosita Arvigo’s website. I was so impressed with what I learned in the first class developed by the Arvigo Institute, which is a weekend intro that anyone can attend, that I ended up taking three levels within one year. It took me about eight months of performing consistent self-care massage that we were taught and receiving only one session from another professional practitioner to notice a substantial decrease in pain.  However, regarding PMS, after taking the Female Tonic remedy formulated by Dr. Arvigo for only one month my PMS symptoms were almost completely diminished.

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy is a non-invasive, external massage technique that blends massage techniques found in Central America with some techniques of advanced Western soft tissue manipulation and some techniques that can be found in several cultures throughout the world such as Thailand, Russia and North Africa. This technique applies anatomy, physiology, herbology, and naprapathy (study of the ligaments, joints and muscles) with Ancient Maya healing techniques to address common female and male complaints. It also utilizes other ancient healing therapies such as herbal tonics and supportive fabric wrapping techniques also known as fajas and rebozo. The massage is meant to guide internal abdominal organs into their proper position for optimum health and well-being. It also improves organ function by relieving congestion and blockages to improving the flow of chi and the circulation of blood and lymph.  This decongesting impact also improves nerve communicate thereby calming and improving nervous symptom function also. This massage is effective for both men and women for digestive support also.

Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN, developed these techniques, after apprenticing with Don Elijio Panti, one of the last of the Traditional Maya Shamans in Belize where she has lived for over 30 years. The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage™ combine modern science with traditional healing and wisdom to produce a holistic path to physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Some of the symptoms and/or conditions that see improvement from this technique are:

  • Painful or irregular menses
  • Irregular ovulation
  • No menstruation at all (dysmenorrhea)
  • PMS
  • Headaches
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Endometriosis/endometritis
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Difficult menopause
  • Painful intercourse
  • Frequent urination
  • Varicose veins
  • Tired legs
  • Numb feet
  • Sore heals
  • Lower back ache
  • Constipation
  • Gastritis
  • Irritable bowel and other digestive complaints
  • Overall preparation for pregnancy

* Some women have also seen improvements and/or reductions in symptoms caused by fibroids and endometriosis when receiving regular sessions.  However, for best results for those two situations,  working in tandem with a specialized medical practictioner, herbalist, nutritionist and/ or other professional is often incorporated.

Some things that can cause displacement and/or dysfunction of digestive and reproductive organs that this massage can address are:

  • Injury to sacrum or tailbone from hard falls or accidents
  • Adhesions from past abdominal surgeries
  • High impact exercise
  • Chronic muscle spasm around sacrum, low back, or abdomen
  • Strain from lifting and carrying objects that are too heavy
  • Overstretched ligaments from pregnancy and childbirth
  • And in some cases, release of withheld emotions.

It was toward the end of the eight months that I remembered I had had two hard falls to my sacrum and hips from dance rehearsals around the time the pain started. Without this education I wouldn’t have had any idea that it might have contributed to my worsening cycles.

Since that time I have helped people improve digestion and women become pregnant, substantially decrease painful menstrual cramping, regulate cycles or bring them back when they had stopped and more. It is my hope to positively impact and help educate as many people as I can with the rebalancing of their organs through massage, aromatherapy and the gentle guidance of the Maya lineage and training I received to assist others with achieving greater health.

There have been some MDs who have written articles expressing concern about practitioners of these techniques being misleading with regards to the benefits for fertility, cysts, fibroids, and PMS because there have been no official double blind studies and/or there is no “firm science” behind the techniques. However, looking at the science conducted on the benefits of massage there are a number of known  and confirmed benefits including improvements within both the lymphatic and blood circulatory systems. What is also well documented is the potential for positive impact those improvements can have on organs, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. The Arvigo institute is currently in process of compiling hundreds of case studies that utilize these massage techniques, vaginal steams (also under fire from some physicians as having no benefit), and the herbal remedies (much more completely studied). The compilation may not be as respected as double blind studies, but it still shows substantially positive impact.

These techniques were freely shared by Rosita Arvigo’s teachers and she was encouraged to share them with the world after promising to help protect the plant medicines found in the rainforests of Belize. She has done that by creating a protected botanical reserve in Belize and by starting a school for local young people to learn these methods at no cost to them. As Don Elijio was approaching the end of his life, there was no one from his family, village or surrounding villages who was interested in in apprenticing with him to continue his lineage and this ancient tradition as had been done many generations before him, keeping the knowledge alive. Rosita was passionately interested and because she was a Westerner was put through a long test, which she eventually passed. Also, Don Elijio Panti was not her only teacher, and so these techniques come from Mayan people of Central America, as well as grandmother healing and midwifery techniques from African diaspora traditions in Central America also. In the past 15 years people from all over the world have been coming to Rosita Arvigo and her institute to share this knowledge and utilize these healing techniques internationally.
