In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the negative aspects of our experiences, leaving us with a “happiness deficit” that can lead to overwhelming anxiety and depression. However, there’s a simple self-care practice I call “Noticing the Okay Moments” that can help us balance the scales and foster a sense of contentment in our daily lives.
As humans, we are wired to remember the negative situations and events to avoid them in the future. But this tendency often makes us overlook the good, easy, or joyful times that occur amidst life’s challenges. By consciously recognizing and cherishing these moments of contentment, we can gradually cultivate a stronger foundation for overall happiness.
So, here’s how the practice works: whenever you find yourself in a moment, pause and ask a few questions. Take a deep breath between each question to center yourself in the present.
- Am I safe right now, right here in this moment?
- Do I have everything I need right now for this moment?
- Am I warm and dry?
- Am I satisfied, neither hungry nor thirsty?
- Am I comfortable?
- Am I okay right now, here in this moment?
If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, take quick action to address the issue – whether it’s putting on a sweater, having a drink of water, or attending to any other immediate need. Then, ask yourself the questions again.
However, when the answer to all the questions is ‘yes’, take a moment to appreciate the present. Breathe deeply, relax, and repeat to yourself, “In this moment, I’m safe, I have everything I need, and I’m okay!” Allow a smile to form and become aware of the sensation of safety, security, and peace within your body.
These “okay moments” may seem mundane or neutral, often overlooked in the grand scheme of our day-to-day lives. But much like saving coins in a jar, consciously collecting these short, scattered minutes of contentment contributes to your “positive mental bank account.” The more you practice this mindfulness exercise, the more you’ll notice these moments, and you’ll come to realize that “okay-ness” is, in fact, contentment in disguise.
Remember, just as one coin alone doesn’t hold much value, a jar full of coins can be worth a significant sum. Similarly, one minute of contentment may not seem like much, but when you consistently gather and savor these moments, they build a strong foundation that can easily sustain your overall happiness.
So, embrace the practice of “Noticing the Okay Moments” and allow yourself to savor the simple joys that life presents. By doing so, you’ll nurture contentment within and find a more profound sense of well-being and peace in your journey.
